SEO Part 2: Indexing Your Website

Title tags

Title tags are similar to chapters of a book. Users want to know what the page is about so they can decide if it’s the correct place to find the information they are searching. Often times search words are shown in bold.

Google recommends:

• Having a title tag on every page of your website
• Make titles descriptive and concise
• Don’t repeat keywords (keyword stuffing)
• Repeated titles
• Branded titles
• Not titling your page and depending on robots.txt files to keep it hidden

Sitewise uses the HTML suggestions page inside Google webmasters tools to check for errors regarding title tags, meta descriptions, and alt tags.

Meta tags

Meta tags are short descriptions of the page and are used directly below the title of a search engine result page to draw the searcher to the best result. Often times search words are shown in bold.

Google recommends:

• Having a meta tag on every page of your website
• Make each page meta tag different
• Include facts (does not have to be sentence format)
• Auto generate descriptions (when appropriate)
• A couple sentences long (160 characters)
• Accurately summarize page content

Alt tags and image file names

An image file name is the name you saved the image. Alt tags are short descriptions of an image and are used so search engines and the visually impaired can understand what the image represents.

  • Having an alt tag on every image
  • Provide good context around images
    • Image name
    • Alt tag’
    • Captions
  • Place images close to related content
  • Use great quality photos
  • Standalone landing page for each image
  • Putting images high on page

  • Specify a width and height for all images

Sitewise formula
